Artificial turf holds up only as well as what goes under it. We install the drainage and base materials first, then the turf, with mortared hardscape edging where the install calls for it. Turf laid on compacted native soil holds water, and pet areas especially need a base that drains freely or odor sets in within months. Procedure

The base comes first: excavate, install and compact base material in lifts, and shape it so water moves instead of pooling. Drainage is built into that base, not added afterward. Turf is then laid to the finished grade, seamed, and secured at the perimeter. Where a proper install calls for it, we set mortared hardscape edging so the edges stay put rather than lifting.
